What is Obesity?

موٹاپا ایک ایسی حالت ہے جس میں جسم میں غیر ضروری چربی کی مقدار بڑھ جاتی ہے، جو صحت پر منفی اثر ڈال سکتی ہے۔ یہ مسئلہ دنیا بھر میں تیزی سے بڑھ رہا ہے، خاص طور پر ترقی پذیر ممالک میں۔

Obesity Rate in Pakistan

Due to poor dietary habits, low activity levels, and an unhealthy lifestyle, the obesity rate in Pakistan is increasing rapidly. In Pakistan, over 30% of adults are obese (2024 stats), and children are also falling prey to obesity.

Causes of Obesity:

There are many factors behind obesity, such as genes, environment, and habits. Some common causes include:

Central obesity:

When extra fat is stored around the belly and waist, it’s termed central obesity, which leads to the risk of diabetes, cardiac conditions, and several other serious illnesses.

Truncal obesity:

Indicates that the fat is concentrated in the center of the body, adversely affecting metabolism.

Unhealthy eating:

Fast food and fatty meals taken more lead to quick weight gain.

Insufficient physical activity:

A sedentary lifestyle is a key driver of obesity.

Mental stress:

Long-term stress and poor sleep can also cause people to put on weight.

Effects of Obesity

Obesity can lead to several physical and mental health problems, including:

  • Hypertension and cardiovascular diseases.
  • Type 2 diabetes.
  • Weakness in bones and joint pain.
  • Respiratory and sleep irregularities.
  • Depression and low self-esteem.

Is Obesity a Behavioral Problem?

There is a division among health experts on the topic: is obesity a behavioral problem? Yes, obesity is associated not only with physical but also with lifestyle and habits. Poor eating habits, emotional eating, a sedentary lifestyle, etc all play role leading to obesity. Medical professionals all over the world believe that a healthy lifestyle needs to be re-emphasized to prevent obesity.

Conclusion

Obesity is a major problem that causes many health problems. However, the obesity rate is on the rise in Pakistan, but it can be prevented by adopting a healthy lifestyle along with healthy nutrition. If one suffers from central obesity or truncal obesity, he must make immediate changes in daily lifestyle and habits.
