The smog originated with a blend of smog plus fog. It poses a significant health threat, especially among regions that have increased pollution rates, such as Pakistan. Its adverse impacts on human health are becoming increasingly high, and getting to know more and more about these risks is highly important for protecting well-being.

Respiratory Issues

One of the most severe impacts that occur due to smog on human health is the life-threatening impact it creates on the respiratory system. Smog contains pollutants like carbon monoxide, particle pollution, and ground-level ozone, which can result in chronic respiratory diseases. Diseases such as asthma and bronchitis are aggravated by smog inhalation, and chronic inhalation of these pollutants that are resulting in irreparable damage to the lungs, making breathing even more difficult.

Cardiovascular Problems

Smog not only impact lungs but also the heart adversely. The fine particles present in smog are capable of entering the bloodstream and enhance the threat of heart-related conditions, such as heart attacks and strokes in susceptible individuals like elderly people or the ones having preexisting cardiovascular conditions.

Eye Irritation

It is another common smog side effect. The particles present in smog become the cause of redness, dryness, and discomfort in the eyes. Extended exposure may result in more serious conditions such as conjunctivitis, especially in individuals with sensitive eyes. Smog can also cause worse allergies, aggravating symptoms like sneezing and watery eyes.

Smog is an emerging issue in Pakistan, more evidently visible in cities like Lahore, Multan, and a few others. The blend of industrial discharge, vehicle exhaust, and agricultural burning results in high-level pollution. This altogether makes smog a continuous threat to the environment of the whole country.

How to Avoid Smog

To improve the harmful impacts of smog, it is important to take proactive steps. Avoiding outdoor activities, especially during times of high pollution, keeping windows and doors closed, use of air purifiers can serve to alleviate exposure. Wearing face masks mainly by individuals with respiratory issues and sensitive eyes can also be beneficial during smog times.

Smog leaves intense negative impacts on human health involving respiratory and cardiovascular problems, eye irritation, and weakened immunity. It is also very crucial to know that as the smog gets intense, proactive steps need to be taken to avoid the exposure to its max.
