Types of Diabetes

Sana Zia:10/29/2024

Diabetes is a chronic health disease that develops and impacts how our body processes blood sugar (glucose). There are primarily three types:

  • TYPE 1
  • Type 2
  • Gestational Diabetes.

Each of the above-mentioned types has diverse characteristics, causes, and management strategies

1. Type 1 Diabetes

Nature

Type 1 diabetes (T1D) is an autoimmune state where the body raids on insulin-producing beta cells in the pancreas.

Symptoms:

The most common symptoms include exorbitant thirst, extreme hunger, tiredness, and blurred vision.

Management:

Individuals with Type 1 diabetes need to inject insulin either through injections or insulin pumps to deal with their blood glucose levels.

Cure:

Currently, there is no cure for type 1 diabetes. But research is still going on, though the focus is primarily on management instead of a definitive cure.

2. Type 2 Diabetes

Nature:

Type 2 diabetes (T2D) often links to lifestyle factors and occurs when the body resists insulin and does not utilize it effectively.

Prevalence:

The “prevalence of diabetes” in Pakistan is rising critically, with millions getting affected by Type 2 diabetes due to laziness, sedentary lifestyles, and unhealthy diets.

Symptoms:

Symptoms can be quite similar to Type 1, including increased thirst, frequent urination, and tiredness, but may develop slowly and gradually.

Management:

Type 2 diabetes can mostly be managed by changing lifestyles, including diet, exercise, and sometimes medication. In some instances, insulin therapy may also be needed.

3. Gestational Diabetes

Nature:

Ladies often experience this type during pregnancy when their bodies fail to produce enough insulin to meet their increased needs.

Symptoms:

In many women, these symptoms may not be noticeable; however, they may lead to complications for both mother and baby if not dealt with properly.

Management:

Gestational type gets resolved after the mother has undergone the process of childbirth. However, the importance of monitoring and management during pregnancy to ensure the health of the mother and child cannot be denied.

Blood Donation for Diabetes Patients

Many people ask, “Can diabetic patients donate blood?” The answer is usually yes if they manage their blood sugar levels well and have no other disqualifying health conditions. Healthcare providers also recommend consulting them before donating blood.

The importance of diet cannot be neglected in managing the symptoms. Dry fruits for diabetic patients can be useful as they are nutrient-dense and can serve to regulate blood sugar levels when consumed moderately. Some suitable options include:

Almonds:

Walnuts:

Beneficial for heart health and may help reduce inflammation.
