Is Human Metapneumovirus Contagious? Symptoms and Treatment Explained

Sana Zia:1/22/2025

Over the past few years, viral infections have risen in the world, with new diseases making headlines. Another is human metapneumovirus (HMPV), which is generating questions about how it spreads, its symptoms, and its treatment. However, given that a new virus with similar symptoms to HMPV is alarmingly making headlines in Pakistan and the world is questioning if it is the cause of these outbreaks, familiarity with HMPV is crucial. Here’s what you need to know.

What is Human Metapneumovirus?

Human metapneumovirus, a respiratory virus closely related to the respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), was first identified in 2001. It adversely impacts the respiratory tract, leading to diseases from mild colds to severe respiratory infections. While it’s not a novel, there have been increasing human cases reported in recent months and years, leading this virus to gain the attention of scientists as a public health threat.

Is Human Metapneumovirus Contagious?

Outbreaks are common in densely populated areas, especially during colder months. Reports of viral infection in Pakistan have highlighted the need for vigilance, particularly as this virus can mimic other respiratory infections, making diagnosis challenging.

Yes, human metapneumovirus is very contagious and spreads through respiratory droplets, in the same way as the flu or common cold. The virus can be passed on to anyone nearby when an infected person coughs, sneezes or even speaks. It can also be transmitted by touching contaminated surfaces followed by touching the face, especially the nose, mouth, or eyes.

Outbreaks are common in densely populated regions, particularly during colder months. Cases of viral infection reported in Pakistan have raised the alarm bells for caution as the scourge can closely resemble other respiratory illnesses, rendering diagnosis difficult.

Symptoms of Human Metapneumovirus Infection

Symptoms of HMPV are similar to those of other respiratory illnesses and vary by age and health status, including immune status. Common symptoms include:

• Fever

• Cough

• Shortness of breath

• Runny or stuffy nose

• Sore throat

• Fatigue

• Reverbose or labored breathing (in extreme cases)

Children, elderly people, and those with weakened immune systems are more likely to suffer severely, from pneumonia or bronchitis. HMPV, which can often resemble emerging illnesses like a China virus that can create respiratory problems, has also raised concerns as it sometimes becomes a cause of emerging respiratory diseases.

Treatment and Prevention

At present, there is no targeted antiviral therapy for human metapneumovirus. Nevertheless, supportive care can control symptoms and prevent complications. Here are some essential next steps:

Rest and Hydration:

Make sure the patient takes enough fluids and rests.

Over-the-counter medications:

Take medications like acetaminophen or ibuprofen to help reduce fever and provide more comfort.

Monitor symptoms:

Approach medical aid if troubled in breathing or if facing a high fever that doesn’t go below 102 F (38.9 C) or seems to get worse.

For prevention: follow these tips:

  • Wash hands often with soap and water.
  • Stay away from sick people.
  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces, particularly during outbreaks.
  • Use a mask in crowded settings during high viral seasons.

The Growing Impact in Pakistan

Against the backdrop of rising fears of a new virus in Pakistan, awareness and action need to be put in place. Virus spread, such as the recent proliferation of human metapneumovirus, can be accelerated by a global increase in travel and urban density. Health officials are not expecting a large spread, but they are watching the situation closely.

Final Thoughts

While human metapneumovirus (hMPV) may not gain the same popularity as some of the more well-known respiratory viruses, the effect of this pathogen can be crucial, particularly for at-risk groups. Awareness of symptoms, adherence to good hygiene, and seeing a health care provider when needed are key measures to control its spread.

As the world awaits news on new dangers such as the China virus, prevention and early treatment continue to be paramount. Staying alert is the only way to safeguard ourselves and others from this and other viral infections present in Pakistan.
