Monkeypox reports have been all over the news in recent years. This viral infection, which is related to human small virus, is primarily found in the tropical rainforests of Central and West Africa. It has recently, however, spread to other parts of the world, including the United States, the United Kingdom, Pakistan, India, Singapore, raising concerns among public health officials and members of the general public. In this blog we will explore, what is monkeypox virus? Monkeypox transmission and precautions.

What is MonkeyPox Virus?

Smallpox, cowpox, and the uncommon viral illness known as monkeypox are all members of the Orthopoxvirus family. It was first discovered in 1958, when an outbreak occurred amongst the monkeys kept in Denmark for research. Since then, the disease has been documented in a number of African nations, particularly in the rain forest areas where wild animals like rodents and primates act as virus reservoirs.

Although generally less severe, the symptoms of monkeypox are comparable to those of smallpox. Fever, headache, aches in the muscles, and a skin rash that turns into lesions on the face and body that are filled with pus are some of the initial symptoms. Symptoms like swollen lymph nodes, back pain and lethargy has been noticed as well. Monkeypox can be fatal in extreme cases and result in complications like pneumonia and meningitis.

MonkeyPox Transmission

Infected animals or people can contract monkeypox by coming into contact with their bodily fluids or skin lesions. The virus can enter the body through cuts, scratches, bites, or through respiratory droplets inhaled from infected people. Additionally, contaminated surfaces, such as clothing, bedding or utensils can spread the virus.

Monkeypox cases have increased in recent years, among people who have come into contact with sick animals like pet prairie dogs, rodents, and monkeys. This demonstrates how crucial it is to be knowledgeable about the dangers involved in interacting with wild or exotic animals and to take all necessary safety measures when visiting areas where monkeypox is an endemic disease.
