Dark circles are always a stressful thing for many people. Many health-related issues lead to this issue.  Therefore, knowing the main cause of the dark circles when they appear is crucial. Because with understanding the cause, one can work on the effective treatment then. The discussion below will explain the different health concerns that refer to the dark circles around the eyes along with treatment that can be beneficial.

Causes of dark circles

1. Allergies:

Allergies are one of the main reasons for causing dark circles around the eyes that are often referred to as “ allergic shiners”. When people are stuck in allergies such as pollen, dust etc, then bodies emit histamines. This emission results in blood vessels to expand thus becomes more visible under the skin around the eyes. This allergic reaction causes itchiness and urge to rub the eye, thus leading it more adverse results.

2. Eczema and Dermatitis:

Skin disorders like eczema and contact dermatitis can result in surfacing of these dark circles. These states can cause inflammation, dryness and irritation around the eyes, resulting in discoloration. When people stuck in these conditions scratch or rub in the infected area, it links to further damage to the skin resulting in a more darkened look.

3. Iron Deficiency Anemia:

Iron deficiency anemia is also one of the reasons causing dark circles around the eyes. If the body faces a deficiency of iron, it results in bad oxygen circulation in the body along with the delicate skin under the eyes. It then results in a pale complexion and dark under-eye circles. In extreme cases, anemia can result in a blush tint arising under the eyes due to the thinness of the skin in that area.

4. Thyroid Disorder:

Thyroid-related disturbances mainly hypothyroidism reduce the body’s metabolism, resulting in poor blood circulation and fluid retention. Then this results in puffiness and skin darkness under the eyes. In some instances, the condition can lead to the thinning of the skin and more prominently visible blood vessels.

5. Dehydration:

It is a not-so-popular but certainly crucial part that can result in dark circles. When the body fails to restore enough water, the very initial sign that appears is that the eyes become dull and sunken.

Lack of enough hydration can lead the skin to become thin and translucent and more exposed blood vessels under the eyes, so, staying hydrated is important to maintain healthy skin and avoid dark circles under the eyes.

6. Genetic Factors:

Genetics hold a very significant role in the development of dark circles under the eyes. People with a family history of dark circles are more impressionable to them, even if they have no underlying health conditions. Genetic factors can impact skin pigmentation, thickness and blood vessel visibility, all of which lead to dark skin under the eyes.

7.  Liver and Kidney Problems:

These health issues are also one of the causes leading to discoloration around the eyes. It occurs when the liver and kidney face fluid retention. Diseases like hepatitis or cirrhosis can lead to dark circles under the eyes due to increased levels of bilirubin in the blood. Similarly, kidney malfunction can lead the body to retain fluid, resulting in under-eye bags and discoloration around the eyes.

8.  Sleep disorder and Stress:

Though not directly related to health issues, sleep disorders such as insomnia, sleep apnea and general lack of sleep can result in dark circles. Poor sleep leaves bad impacts on the skin to repair and rejuvenate, leading to paler skin and the appearance of blood vessels under the eyes.

Intense stress also adds to poor sleep and elevated cortisol levels, both of which can intensify the issue.

9. Aging and Collagen Loss:

Aging is also one of the factors that can result in the formation of dark circles around the eyes. As the aging process advances, the skin loses collagen and vitality thus becomes thinner and more fragile. This thinning makes blood vessels under the eyes more prominently visible leading to the visibility of dark circles. Although aging is not taken as a health issue, still an inevitable factor that leaves adverse impacts on skin health.

Prevention and Treatment:

To effectively manage the issue, it is essential to address co-related health issues. For instance, if one has been facing allergies, the use of antihistamines and avoiding allergens can help a great deal. Similarly, if one has anemia, iron supplements or an iron-supported diet may help provide relief symptoms. In the same way, proper hydration, enough sleep and effective management of stress can be beneficial largely.

Additionally, topical treatments such as the use of creams containing vitamin C, retinoid and hyaluronic serums for dark circles can be beneficial in reducing the appearance of dark circles under eyes for males too providing a boost to collagen production and improving skin elasticity. In advanced treatments cosmetic procedures such as laser treatment, fillers and chemical peels can also be used in more advanced treatments cosmetic procedures such as laser treatment, fillers and chemical peels can also be used.
